Social Distancing and Self-Isolation - How I’m Taking Care of Myself

It’s no secret that this is a stressful time in the world. No one likes to be told what to do, and being told to stay inside as the weather starts to get warm is definitely a challenge. It’s important to take care of ourselves during this time of self-isolation and social distancing, and here are my top three things I’m doing to cope.

Logging Off

Being online right now isn’t as much of a distraction as it usually is. Everywhere you go, its news, and memes, about what’s going on in the world. It’s exhausting, and I’ve been making sure that I take a few hours each day to not look at social media. No Twitter, no Facebook, no Instagram, and no TikTok.

Cleaning

Since I’m not going online, it’s super easy to succumb to the free time and just sleep. Something I’ve been doing to keep my life “normal” is cleaning. Cleaning gives me something to do to keep my mind distracted. It also is something that needs to be done anyways, so we’re killing two birds here, right?! The other day I cleaned my room, my sheets, put in a new reed diffuser, and opened up the windows. It felt so good going to sleep that night because of how peaceful everything was. Sleeping through this hard time of social distancing and self-isolation isn’t going to make it better, it very much could make it worse.

Walking

No one said that we had to actually stay inside all the time! There’s tons of trails and pathways all over that could take hours to walk through! The weather is getting nicer, so go outside, take a walk, get some of that restlessness out. Make it fun by bringing your phone with you and testing out your photography skills!

Binging

No. Not like eating all the food you’ve stockpiled in the closet. Social distancing is the perfect excuse though to finally make some progress getting through the list of shows and movies you’ve been wanting to watch! If you’re looking to get into Marvel, now’s a great time to watch all 23 movies! Grey’s Anatomy? Now you have plenty of time to get through all 16 or so seasons. Want to rewatch Harry Potter? Who’s stopping you?!

Reading

I don’t know about you, but every time I go into a bookstore or Target, I end up buying a new book (or three) and then they end up sitting on my bookshelf never to be read. Well, now I have no reason to not crack them open and see what’s inside! New worlds, great advice, and escape from reality is definitely something to get excited about during self-isolation and social distancing.

No matter what it is you decide to do to get through this time of social distancing and self-isolation, remember to take care of yourself physically, and mentally. Stay away from big crowds, and don’t forget to wash your hands!
